Neither sleet nor snow nor dark of night will stop Knit Night

Will it really be bad?

It’s hard to tell what the weather is really going to be like tomorrow when we wake up, but unless the roads are impassable, we’ll be open. They’re saying that whatever might stick to the roads in the morning will all be rained out by early afternoon, so Knit Night is on as of right now. And do we have stuff to show you! But first things first.

Kim

Remember Kim from Sunday? Kim whose picture I botched? This is Kim. I said she was pretty, didn’t I?

luxury 5

Here’s a little teaser for you — Lantern Moon’s new luxury double points are in in most sizes 0 through 5. We have just a few rosewoods and most sizes of ebony and blondewood. They are divine!

It was a real party

You shoulda been there, we had a blast! First there were just a few but by the middle of the afternoon there were 15 of us!

Let’s see, there was Susanna and her mother, Janet. Isn’t Susanna’s sweater pretty? Nancy showed up, as promised, with her stage prop knitting in hand. She has done a wonderful job of creating some truly awful knitting. Frances came by to work on her scarf, made out of Rowan Cash Soft, I think. (I snuck a shot of her cute Trekking socks when she wasn’t looking.)

Then we had the Fair Isle crew. This is a group, affectionately known as the Thursday Divas, who’ve been knitting together at Yarn Expressions for the better part of a year. They took basic knitting, moved on to intermediate, and couldn’t get enough. Just before Christmas they decided to immerse themselves in the world of Fair Isle knitting. These three are all knitting Hillswick Lumber, from Anne Feitelson’s book of Fair Isle designs. Here’s Jan’s swatch. Kim is doing the dragonfly vest from Sweaters From Camp. (Kim, honey, trust me, you don’t want me to post the picture I took of you. I’m not always so good when it comes to photographing faces. Even of pretty women like you.)

Not only did we have knitters, we had spinners too! I was too busy taking pictures, but one of these days I’m going to pay attention when Annette and Phyllis start spindling.

Kay, Donna and Jill, you’ll just have to come back next month, so I can take pictures of you. And Kim. I promise to do better then.

Y’all Could Be Famous

How? Show up at the Knit-In Sunday afternoon and help knit a stage prop.

Next month, Fantasy Playhouse is putting on Twinderella (did you know Cinderella had a twin brother named Bob?) and they need some intentionally awful knitting. Nancy Morris is going to be at the Knit-In, and we thought it would be fun for everyone to do their best worst for this worthy cause. Nancy’s got the knitting started, we get to keep it going.

The knitting starts at 1:00 Sunday — bring your needles and plan to have fun. See you then.

If this is Thursday, it must be Knit Night

Time to knit from your stash, folks. From the number of phone calls and e-mails I’ve received this week, I’d say we’re going to have a lively group tonight. And if Thursday night’s not enough for you, come back for the expanded version, on Sunday afternoon at 1:00. Just the way to spend a cold, blustery afternoon — knitting with friends new and old.
Two Stix knitting bags more Two Stix knitting bags Look at these cute bags that just came in. They’re handmade by a small company in nearby Decatur, GA called Two Stix. Made from fulled commercial material that’s been liberally embellished, the bag is suspended from a pair of #15 rosewood needles and completed with a nifty wavy handle. Perfect Valentine’s Day gifts.

See you tonight!

We’re gonna buy your stash! And other fun stuff…

Yes, you did read that right — we are going to buy your stash.  During our Out with the old, In with the new event, beginning tomorrow, January 22, and running through Saturday, February 3, we’ll buy your unwanted stash yarn for $1.00 a pound.  You’ll get a credit slip in the appropriate amount to be used on purchases that day.  The yarn you sell will find a good home at one of several worthy organizations around town.

We’ll also buy your UFOs — those projects that are never going to be finished and are just hanging around, making you feel guilty about knitting anything else.  Bring the poor dears to us, with yarn ball attached, and we’ll give you a credit slip for $1.00 per pound, to be used on purchases that day.  These will be donated to a one woman show being produced by actress Kristina Wong, who is using knitting as a metaphor for life.  If you include your name and reason for abandoning the project on a card with the knitting, you’ll be credited in the show program.

Continuing with the use-your-stash theme, we’re declaring Thursday nights to be Knit from Your Stash night.  Come join us from 5:00 to 7:00 and knit up your stash yarn already!

Announcing our very first style show!  Mark your calendars — February 12 is the date, 7:00 - 9:00 is the time, Yarn Expressions is the place.  We’ll be showcasing beautiful designs from Aurora Yarns bevy of yarn companies, Garnstudio, Ornaghi and Steinbach, with sweaters for adults and young folk, modeled by customers and staff.  We’ll also have on hand a trunk show of bags from Jordana Paige, goody bags for everyone, live music, nummy treats and discounts on the kits and bags featured at this event.  Tickets are $15, we only have room for 24 people,  and February 12 is coming up fast, so hurry in and get your ticket soon.

lookie, lookie

Pictures!

Tofutsies! Here’s our basket of Tofutsies, the new sock yarn from Southwest Trading Company. At the moment we have all 15 colors they make, but it’s selling fast. I really enjoyed working with the little sample the company sent me late last year.

Look at this display of wool top dyed by Lorna’s Laces!Lorna's Laces Wool Top I love all of these colors. As we were sitting at the table yesterday, contemplating the loveliness, Jill piped up and said, “wouldn’t it be fun to spin up two different colorways and ply them together?” My mind is swimming with the possibilities.

I have new fun planned for us next week, so check back here on Sunday for the announcement. Happy weekend!

Already!

I’ve only been home a day, and already the new merchandise is coming in.  Today’s arrivals are Tofutsies sock yarn from Southwest Trading Company, and wool top for spinning from Lorna’s Laces.  Of course these arrived on the day I left my camera at home.  Pictures tomorrow, I promise.  Along with a continuation of the market saga.  I found so many neat things to share with you…

San Diego Interrupted

When you last heard from me, before my laptop bit the dust, I was getting ready to go to the Retailers Luncheon, eat rubber chicken and be entertained by Kaffe Fassett.

Before lunch was served, we were treated to a visit from Kate Jacobs, author of the newly published novel The Friday Night Knitting Club. We also each received a hardbound copy of the book. There’s been a lot of buzz about this book in yarn shop owner circles, because Julia Roberts has optioned the movie rights, and word is that she’ll play the yarn shop owner, Georgia Walker.

Lunch was definitely not your typical banquet food, thank you San Diego Convention Center. And Kaffe Fassett most certainly did entertain us. No picture taking was allowed, so you’ll have to take my word for it that his slide show made an excellent dessert for a group of men and women who are lovers of yarn. As he was describing the photos, Kaffe told us about a show he put on last year in London, which was attended by the queen. When told the subject of the show, he says she declared “Knitting! I can do that!” and marched off.

From lunch I moved on to my next class — Concentrating on Color, with Brandon Mably. Concentrate on Color Those of you who know me know that I love looking at intarsia, but I’m not so much a fan of knitting it. It’s beautiful, but it just doesn’t click with me. My goal in taking this class was to focus on techniques outside my comfort zone. We started with fair isle squares, and moved on to more abstract shapes. Brandon had a stack of postcards he wanted us to use for color inspiration. Here he is, pinning up everyone’s work. No, I’m not telling which one is mine.

As I left class Friday evening, I looked out to see this beautiful sunset. This was the last lovely weather we’d see. The cold front hit that night.san_diego_sunset.jpg

Knitting Without Boundaries

Valentina Devine is one of my favorite teachers, so I was delighted to be able to take a class with her. I’ve had freeform knitting classes from her before, and this one picked up where the last one left off. The swatch in the picture (sorry for crummy cell phone photos today, folks — I left my camera memory card in the computer yesterday) uses her swirl technique, and can be put together with many others to create a garment, a wall hanging, a pillow… you get the drift.

Knitting Without Boundaries

Valentina Devine Here Valentina is displaying a shawl that uses the other technique we learned, called irregular swatching. It was a blast and I plan to share the fun when I get home.

Today I’m off to the Retailers Luncheon, where eating so-so banquet food is the price we pay to hear Kaffe Fassett speak. Then it’s on to more color work classes, this time with Brandon Mably.

I promise to remember the camera this time.

Greetings from San Diego!

This is a reminder for those of you who might be thinking about showing up at the store this Thursday night after 5:00 — don’t. I’m gone so we’ll be closing at 5. We’ll be back to the regular schedule next week.

This afternoon I talked to Donna, who’s doing an admirable job of holding down the fort while I’m gone, with plenty of assistance from Jill and Kim. She says that the needles I ordered before I left have arrived, so if you’re waiting for needles, come and get ‘em. I also talked to Southwest Trading Company, who says they’re shipping our order of Tofutsies today. This is their incredible new sock yarn, a blend of wool, soy silk and chitin (pronounced kite-in), a product of shrimp and crab shells which offers antibacterial protection. I’ve knitted a few rows with this nifty new fiber, and really like it. If it arrives before I get home, save some for me, okay?

Mom and I have been having a wonderful time in San Diego. The weather has cooperated for once and it’s been great having this time together to catch up. I envy those of you who live close to your family — my family is scattered to the four winds, and no matter how frequently we see each other, it’s never often enough. Mom leaves tomorrow morning, so I’m going to go back to enjoying her company now. Look for another update later in the weekend when I’ve been bowled over by all the new offerings at market. Thanks for all the suggestions of things to look for — y’all are going to keep me hopping this weekend!
