we interrupt your previously scheduled programming

BJ Bass thenBJ Bass now

I don’t normally interject my personal life in this space, but this is important. Today is a momentous birthday for my beloved husband, BJ Bass. Without him I wouldn’t be here, and neither would Yarn Expressions, for more reasons than one. So go wish him a happy birthday, and identify yourself as a friend of Yarn Expressions.

what’s new Wednesday

Here’s a quick look at what’s come in this week:

Nashua’s North American Designers Collection #4, with cover sweater created by my favorite designer, Natalie Wilson. It’s made out of Cilantro.

Top Seed Cotton from Reynolds — 18 glorious colors! It’s a mercerized, cabled cotton, knits at 5 to 5 1/2 stitches to the inch and comes with these really pretty designs. We have a model of the turquoise cardigan on display.

Cotton Tweed, a new yarn from Cabin Fever. It’s a cotton and acrylic blend, perfect for these cute little sweaters. The ladies at Cabin Fever specialize in top down seamless designs, and these children’s cardigans don’t vary from the specialty. One works up at 5 1/2 stitches to the inch, the other pattern at 5 to the inch.

Speaking of top down designs, the newest book from Doreen Marquart, of Saturday Sweaters fame, is a book of top down sweaters for adults. Very nice indeed.

Don’t forget that tomorrow is Knit Night, from 5 to 7. Join the fun!

if you’ve been waiting

If you’ve been waiting

  • ’til the very last minute to place your order for a Jordana Paige bag, that last minute is here. The trunk show leaves in the morning. Ditto the Garnstudio/Ornaghi trunk show.
  • for cable needles, they’re here, at last!
  • for rosewood double points in small sizes, they’re here too.
  • for a sign of Spring, it’s here, in these very cheerful bags from Lantern Moon. Designed with knitters in mind, they also work well as a plain ol’ purse. Available in orange, royal blue and deep red.

it was grand

We had a wonderful knit in yesterday afternoon. Look at all the people! I even got to see a Journey Wheel in action. It was beautiful.

it’s time for a Knit In

This Sunday, from 1:00 to 4:00, come knit, spin, crochet or just visit with us. This is a social gathering, and if it’s anything like last month, much hilarity will ensue.

You’ll also have a last chance to look over the Jordana Paige trunk show — it’s here until Tuesday, and the Garnstudio/Ornaghi trunk show which leaves Wednesday.

Jordana Paige is in the house

Well, not Jordana herself, but her bags are here. We were expecting the trunk show to arrive in time for Monday’s style show, but transit problems ensued and they arrived yesterday instead. Because they’re late, Jordana has graciously offered us a 15% discount on any bags ordered from the trunk show. That means that the Knitters Satchel is now $75.65, the Knitters Messenger Bag is $72.25 (solids) or $78.20 (tweeds) and the Straight Needle Box is $24.65.

If you’re pining for one of these beauties, come in soon, because they, and their special price, will only be here until next Tuesday.

You won’t be sorry!

a picture’s worth a thousand words

That was some style show we had last night! I knew you’d want to see pictures, so I’ve spent the morning putting together a pictorial review of the evening’s festivities. Many thanks to Dawn Tucker for the action shots.

We began the evening with pink silk taffeta goodie bags from Lantern Moon and handmade chocolate dipped strawberries from our neighbor The Chocolate Gallery. Oh my, were they good!

The show began with Jeanne and her daughter Sydney. Jeanne is wearing the Fern Lace Scarf in Garnstudio Silke Tweed, one of my favorite yarns. Sydney is wearing a short-sleeved top knitted in reverse stockinette stitch out of Ornaghi Filati Bamboo. She’s carrying the Very Luminary Baby Blanket, designed by Michele Wyman, made in Ornaghi Filati Merino Layette. That’s Katie wrapped up in the blanket. Get a load of Sydney’s shoes — I want some too!

Following our mother/daughter duo was a mother/daughter trio — Kim, Lauren and Sara. For her first garment of the evening, Kim wore the Lace is More, Love tunic, designed by Lorna Miser, made of Garnstudio Tibet, a chunky wool, acrylic and rayon blend. Kim was followed by her daughters, each wearing a version of Lorna Miser’s Meets in the Middle Chevron Shell. Sara wore the red version in Ornaghi’s Alicante cotton blend; Lauren’s shell was made of Ornaghi’s Dream Print.

Here we have Kirby modeling Michele Wyman’s seamless raglan cardigan from her Classic Beginnings series, made in Ornaghi Filati’s Marbella.

This is Kim again, wearing what we dubbed Sunset on the Beach made in Garnstudio Muskat and Safran.

Kirby reappeared in the final garment of the evening, a show-stopping jacket made of Garnstudio Silke Tweed, with sleeves of Vivaldi mohair, edged in a chunky wool called Eskimo.

Every model you see here has been kitted up, and we’ll have both sweaters and kits on hand until next Tuesday. Stop by and see for yourself how gorgeous they are.

at long last

Our own sock class on DVD

It’s ready! We have just a few copies of the Yarn Expressions sock video, but more will be on the shelf by the end of the week. We’ve switched to DVD format because that’s what most people have asked for. We’ll take special orders for anyone who would prefer a VHS tape. Either format is still just $20.
