an unexpected treat

It’s not often that we get new yarn in the store on Saturday. This morning I had a call from Susan, our rep for Schaefer Yarn, saying her husband was on his way in to town, and had a trunk full of yarn. Would I like to take a look? What do you think I said?many new colors of Anne sock yarn!

See what I found? We ended up with 21 new skeins of Anne, Schaefer’s very popular sock yarn, and all he had of their laceweight silk, Andrea.

yummy silk

Customers are circling the displays even as I type this. What a nice Saturday treat!

it’s been worth the wait

This is Savannah

Savannah DK

a lovely blend of merino wool, organic cotton, linen and soy fiber. I love the ode to this yarn written on their tag.

You have to come see this yarn to truly appreciate it. Pictures just don’t do justice. In the same UPS shipment we received the new Vogue Knitting (best issue I’ve seen in years) and a new felting book from Interweave called Felt Frenzy. It goes beyond knitting and felting, inclluding directions for wet felting, needle felting and some freeform stuff as well. Shannon Oakey strikes again!

It’s a good thing that it’s Knit Night tonight — you’ll have a chance to see these things up close and personal.

ch ch ch ch changes

New and exciting things are happening at Yarn Expressions.

Item #1 is a change in store hours. Beginning April 1, we’ll be open from 11:00 until 4:00 Monday through Saturday, and 11:00 until 7:00 on Thursday.

Item #2 has me really excited. I’ve just signed an agreement with Majacraft to sell their spinning products. Those of you who’ve been to our Sunday Knit and Spin Ins have seen me with my green wheeled Suzie Pro. Now you’ll be able to spin on one too! I’ll be placing an order soon, and hope to have wheels shortly thereafter. We’ll also be making arrangements to have spinning lessons available at Yarn Expressions. Watch for a notice here when they’re finally set up.

Item #3 has me even more excited. We’re in the planning stages for this year’s Knitters Retreat. Set aside October 5-7 so you can join us at the Dubose Conference Center in Monteagle, TN. It’s an easy drive from anywhere in North Alabama, Southern middle Tennessee and North Georgia and the scenery should be gorgeous in early October. There’s space for only 20 people this year, so early sign up is a must. I should have final details and cost ready in the next week or so, and will post a link here when we’re ready to take reservations.

Change is good!

Sunday is Knit In Day

Okay, y’all.  In from the garden.  I know the weather has been stupendous this week, but the frost free date isn’t until mid-April.  Come knit/spin/crochet with us on Sunday afternoon, from 1:00 to 4:00.

It’s all about socks this week. The sequel to Sensational Knitted Socks arrived this morning, along with the new issue of Spinoff, featuring Kool Aid dyed hand knitted socks. We’ll have plenty to drool over at Knit Night tonight. Come on by between 5 and 7.

Knit Night

It’s that time again — Knit Night tonight from 5:00 to 7:00.  Get your fill this week, because we’re closing at 5:00 next Thursday.  I’ll be traveling, and though you certainly can knit without me, I don’t want Janet working alone at night.

Come see the new shades of Rowan’s Calmer that arrived yesterday afternoon, along with their newest yarn for spring — Damask.

ahem…

My apologies to anyone who was inconvenienced by my knee-jerk reaction to last week’s weather forecast. I’ll try not to be so skittish next time, I promise.

On to the new stuff — our shipment from Classic Elite has arrived.

new goodies from Classic Elite new Classic Elite patterns new shades of Classic Silk

In the box are refills of old and new shades of Premiere, our favorite cotton/tencel blend; Classic Silk, just about the nicest silk blend yarn on the market today (read what Grumperina has to say about it); and a new summer cotton called Pebbles. If you remember Sand, this is a thinner version. Gently textured, easy on the hands. We haven’t done any playing with it yet, but it’s on the list.

Both Donna and I are making room in our knitting queue for the cabled beauty on the cover of Summertime Knits. Designed by Kathy Zimmerman (you already guessed that, now didn’t you?), it’s done in Premiere. Perfect for this time of year, when you want sleeves to keep your arms warm, but lightweight enough to stay cool during a walk in the spring sunshine.

Thursday update

I’m watching the weather map, and looking at the list of school and business closings, and have decided to close the store at 11:00 this morning.  Stay home and be warm and dry.  See you tomorrow.

though the winds may blow…

March is certainly coming in like a lion! We’ll be here until 7:00 as usual, and we’re hoping the weather resolves itself and moves on, so we can have Knit Night. If you’re able to brave the elements, you’ll get to see

  • new patterns from K1C2 for Wick and Cottonade;
  • the new Nashua Ecologie Cotton — naturally dyed pima cotton in soft, earthy shades;
  • the shipment from Rowan that just came in — more 4 Ply Soft, Kidsilk Haze, Cashsoft DK and Calmer. I think there’s a new book in there too.

For those of you who ordered bags from the Jordana Paige trunk show — they’re here!
