it’s a brand new week

It’s a brand new week and all the delivery folk in town just love us! Look what came our way…

Kits for the Rainbow Shawl/Stole by Fiddlesticks. We have both the stormy and the earthy colorway on hand. This design uses a double strand of Zephyr, and changes one of the colors periodically, giving that nifty shading effect.

More kits. These Lola Bunny Love kits are from Schaefer Yarns. We have two on hand, complete with needles, stuffing and thread for the eyes. Four more are on their way and should be here tomorrow.

New shades of Big Baby from Muench. This chunky, lofty acrylic blend is great for the world’s easiest baby blanket. Cast on 3 stitches, increase in the first stitch of every row until you’ve used half of your yarn, then decrease at the beginning of every row until you’re back down to 3 stitches. Knit 3 together and weave in your ends. Uses 8 balls of yarn and size 15 needles for a decent sized blanket.

Spin ‘n’ Knit Sunday, New Yarn, New Shawls

Spin ‘n’ Knit Sunday is tomorrow, from 1:00 to 4:00. Bring your latest project, bring your wheel/spindle; plan to have fun. This is a social hour, and we’ve been known to get a little rowdy. It’s too darn hot to be outside — come join us!

New Yarn

062207_jitterbug.jpg

If you guessed that the new yarn pictured last week was Colinette Jitterbug, you were right. We had our first shipment of this colorful sock yarn, and it’s been going like hotcakes! I had been reluctant to buy this yarn because of its short yardage, but my sales rep swears that you can get a decent sized pair of socks from one skein, so I decided to give it a try. There’s a pattern on the ball band, and I made the largest size, following the pattern exactly. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I had used well less than half of the skein on sock number one.

This week we received our first shipment of yarn from Kollage, a yarn company based here in Alabama! The first yarn pictured is Cornucopia, a tape yarn made of, yes indeed, corn. It’s very lightweight and easy to knit. It will work well for summer tops. We also received a supply of Luscious, a fingering weight blend of cotton and lycra that’s perfect for warm weather socks.

New Shawls and Other Show and Tell

Just look at these beauties! This is Robin, who came to Knit Night last week with her Spinner’s Shawl made from, of course, her own handspun Shetland wool. Isn’t she lovely?

This week we had a visit from Beth early in the morning, because she just completed her Angel Lace Shawl. She plans to give it to a woman who has lost a child. What a touching, compassionate gift.

Bev Galeskas, owner of Fiber Trends, describes this shawl as “a wonderful reminder of all the angels in our lives — winged or otherwise.” I think so.

I’d like to leave you with these pictures of Evelyn, an extraordinarily creative soul. Not wanting to waste a single bit of fiber, she takes all the little bits and pieces of yarn she has, chops them up in her blender and cards them in with her wool to spin. Look at the hat she wore to Knit Night this week! Isn’t it great?

Thursday’s bits and pieces

First things first — it’s Knit Night time again. Come one, come all, get out of the heat and have fun knitting and spinning with us. We’re here till 7:00.

Knitters Retreat

The deadline is approaching, and we haven’t met our minimum yet. We need four more people to make this event happen. If you were thinking about signing up but just forgot, here’s your reminder. This one’s going to be easygoing and relaxed; take class if you want, or just come to knit, visit, commune with nature and have no responsibilities to anyone! Who can argue with that? Details and registration form are yours by clicking the button at the top right of the web page that says 2007 Knitters Retreat.

It’s a Community, Folks

Lately there’s been discussion on several of the knitting message boards about LYS etiquette regarding showing up with projects made with yarn not purchased at that shop. Some feel that it’s rude to ask for help at a place where you didn’t buy the yarn. Some also feel it’s inappropriate to show off yarn purchased elsewhere.

At Yarn Expressions we help anyone with any thing we can. Our goal is to help you feel more comfortable with knitting, and to make you want to be part of our community. That purpose would be defeated if we turned away every person who walked in here with yarn they bought someplace else. In 12+ years that policy hasn’t been abused, so we see no reason to change it. ‘Nuf said.

a Twisted Sister comes to Huntsville

twisted_sweaters.jpg

Lynne Vogel, author of Twisted Sisters Sock Workbook has a new book coming out, The Twisted Sister Knit Sweaters. What’s really cool about this is that she’s almost a neighbor (Sewanee isn’t that far away), so she’s coming for a visit.

We’re doing a meet the author event on Sunday, August 26th from 1:00 to 4:00 pm.  Not only will we have books for Lynne to sign, but she’s bringing some of her hand dyed yarn and fiber for us to ooh and aah over (and buy, of course).  I’m also trying to wangle a trunk show of the designs from the book for that weekend.

We’d like to have a head count for this event, so if you’re interested in attending, leave a comment here and we’ll add your name to the list.  There’s no charge, but I’d like to make sure we have enough chairs.

This is going to be fun!

market report

I’m back! Market was a whirlwind of activity, as always. This year it was doubly enjoyable because I had the chance to share it with my daughter, Liz. You can read her account of the weekend at Manning Knits.

I took several classes during the weekend, but the highlight was meeting Lucy Neatby and learning double knit techniques from her. She’s an amazing designer and teacher. This sweater she’s holding is one of her fair isle designs — it would be a lifetime project for moi.

So what did she buy, you ask. Lots, and lots, and lots. So much that I have to tell you about it in more than one post. I’ll start with what’s coming in this month.

  • from Trendsetter, more Merino Sei, their dk weight merino wool, in colors to make Jane Slicer Smith’s new Mitered Drape Vest (so easy and so colorful!) and a jacket that’s edged in mitered squares.
  • from Schaefer Yarns, lots more Anne sock yarn, and their new bunny kit, which is absolutely adorable.
  • from Aurora Yarns, we’ve already received a shipment of Garnstudio Silke Tweed. I’ve loved this yarn for years, and decided to bring it back this year, only to learn that it won’t be available much longer. What we have on hand should last for a while (unless y’all get really greedy), in colors that will work well for sweaters, or for the Latifa Scarf from Knitty a few seasons ago.
  • from Cookie A, her collection of sock patterns. You can see them on the sidebar on her blog.  These are patterns for adventurous sock knitters — I can’t wait to get my hands on them.
  • from Louet, refills of spinning fiber, both dyed and undyed, and almost a dozen shades of their Gems Sportweight wool.  This stuff is so incredibly soft.  I love working with it, and it’s machine washable, so it’ll be perfect for kids stuff as well as adult garments.
  • from the Yarn Place, a new laceweight cashmere blend.  I only ordered a few colors, to see how it goes over, but I’m betting I’ll re-order before the summer is over.
  • from Kollage, I ordered two new yarns — Luscious, a stretchy cotton/nylon sock yarn, and Cornucopia, made from corn.  Both should be here soon, Kollage is just down the road in Birmingham!
  • from Crystal Palace, more needles, new shades of Panda Cotton, new shades of Taos, and two new yarns — Kaya and Maizy.
  • from Colinette, more shades of Tao silk, the Arboretum book which has patterns combining Tao and Parisienne lace mohair, and Jitterbug, their very popular sock yarn.
  • lots and lots of books and patterns from our friends at Iknitiative, Up North Fiber Art Supply, Infiknit, and others.  Lace is the thing for this warm season.  We’ll have lots of new patterns and some old favorites on the shelves soon.

Come back tomorrow, when I’ll tell you about a special book signing we’re going to have in August.
