Yarn Expressions to have new owner

I am pleased to be able to tell you that Yarn Expressions will continue to be North Alabama’s favorite yarn store, with a new owner. Katherine Levine has agreed to buy Yarn Expressions, and she and I are working hard to make the transition as seamless as possible.

Katherine has been involved in the needlecraft world for much of her life, and has an extensive background in retail sales. She will assume ownership of Yarn Expressions on October 1 of this year.

We are still working on the fine details of the transfer, but you can be assured that very little will change. Yarn Expressions will still be the same friendly place to come for help and inspiration. Knit Night will continue to be the place to be on Thursday nights. New merchandise will begin arriving soon after the transition. All the people and traditions you’ve come to love will be right here.

We’ll be closed for a few days of the last week of September to do inventory before the transfer of ownership. We’ll let you know the exact dates as soon as possible.

Once again, I thank you for your years of loyal support, friendship and for helping to make Yarn Expressions the best thing I ever did.

Don’t come visit me at Yarn Expressions on Saturday, because we’ll be closed.  They’ve promised to take me to the fireworks!  Have a happy and safe Fourth!

Comings and Goings and Upcoming Events

Greetings, all!  I’ve been traveling again, and this time Peppie got to join in the fun and make a new friend.  We spent the weekend with Baby Joe and his parents, and my mother joined us, all the way from Arizona.  She and Peppie had never met, but as you can see, they became the best of friends.  Mom threatened to pack her up in her suitcase, so I was on missing dog patrol for a while.

Peppie and Grandma

Now that we’re home, I thought I’d remind you that the combined May/June Knit and Spin In will be this coming Sunday, May 23, from 1:00 to 4:00.  I have some new handspun to show off, and a pitifully small amount of knitting to share.  I always think I’m going to get so much knitting done when I travel, and I’m usually disappointed in my output.

One more announcement — we’ll be closed for the Memorial Day weekend.  We’ll be closing at 4:00 on Friday the 28th and won’t open until Tuesday the 1st of June (June!  already!).  So come knit and spin with us this weekend and then enjoy your holiday travels and parties.  Me?  I’m going to the Tennessee Fiber Festival on Saturday with a friend.

Sunday Spin and Knit In

Ordinarily, the Sunday Spin and Knit In is held the first Sunday of each month.  My schedule is crazy, and apparently so is everyone else’s.  So, we’ve decided to consolidate the May and June dates and have just one meeting on Sunday, May 23rd.

So, go out and enjoy the sunshine and good weather this Sunday, and come back to us on the 23rd with your spindle, wheel, fiber and yarn.  We’ll be here from 1:00 until 4:00 having our usual fun time.

Wrapper’s Delight

“In the Spring, I have counted 136 different kinds of weather inside of 24 hours.”
— Mark Twain

I’m very glad to see that warm Spring weather is going to stay with us. I love Spring weather because you get the sunshine and reasonably warm temperatures during the day (70’s), but have cool evenings. The cool evenings seem especially relaxing in the Spring. If you have a front porch (or stoop) it’s a great place to enjoy the evening.

Wrapitude

If you spend time outside in those cool Spring evenings, you may get a bit chilly. The solution to that is to create a shawl or wrap that will keep you cozy. There are two great books I’d like to highlight that may present a pattern to you that you’ll find hard to resist. Vogue Knitting always comes out with great publications, and their Shawls & Wraps is no exception. The book contains 40+ wrap and shawl projects that will help chase away the chill.

Another book I was looking at today that I found captivating was Nature’s Wrapture by Sheryl Thies. The projects in the book were created with the idea that they are based on the colors and textures of nature. So you get designs like Flame, Dragonfly, Snowdrift, and Supernova. There are 20 projects in the book including shawls, wraps, and scarves.

Of course, once you decide upon a project you’ll need something to create it with. In the photo I’ve included you’ll see several yarns with which you could create a project from the elegant to the bold. Pictured above are Classic Elite’s Silky Alpaca Lace (great for Vogue’s Trellis Lace Shawl), Cascade’s Ultra Pima 100% cotton (try with Vogue’s Zigzag Stole), Misti Alpaca’s cotton and silk blend for the “Flames” wrap in Nature’s Wrapture, or perhaps you’d like to get some Mooi fingering weight yarn and make the Sandy Beach project from Nature’s Wrapture.

The best way to determine which project would be best for you, and which yarn(s) would be best to create it with, is to come down and take a look for yourself. We are happy to help you find what you need to create something from these books. If you aren’t sure about your skill level or would like some help along the way, we’re also glad to assist you.

Join us for our first Knit Night of April (no foolin’!) tonight and you can take a look at these great books while sharing some yarn and conversation.

See you soon!

~Bill

Changes in Communication

Like everyone, we’re struggling to find ways to conserve and economize in order to keep the budget balanced and the bills paid.  As a result, I’ve decided to eliminate the toll-free number that’s been associated with Yarn Expressions. Most people e-mail us these days, or use their cell phones to call.

We’re still just a click or a call away, I promise.  Just click on the “contact us” button in the right hand panel of this web page and you’ll be able to e-mail us.  If you want to hear a live voice, you may call us at (256) 881-0260.

March Spin and Knit This Sunday (March 7th)

Part of the fun of working in a store like Yarn Expressions is that you meet a lot of great people, many whom knit, crochet, or spin. Some do all of that and more! We have a great community of people and are glad for all of them.

While we may see them often, and often times knit with them while they are there, you may not get to meet them at all. That’s why we do our best to make sure to set aside time during the week and at least one weekend a month to relax, knit/spin/crochet, trade stories, and share triumphs and tribulations.

The monthly Spin and Knit will be this Sunday, March 7th, from 1-4pm at Yarn Expressions. Bring your wheel, your needles, your hooks (crochet or pirate) and join us for what will hopefully be a nice somewhat Spring-ish afternoon.

If you can’t make it on Sunday, perhaps you can come sometime on a Thursday? As many of you already know we have a Knit Night every Thursday from 4-7pm. The night also gives those who can’t get to the store during regular hours a chance to browse and shop.

Come and join us!

Malabrigo Rasta Patterns

The Malabrigo Rasta has been very popular. If you are in the store for very long at all, you’ll find that its colors are hard to resist. This is true for myself, as it has been for Val, Jill, and Donna. Val, Jill, and Donna were so excited about the new Malabrigo Rasta that they each created a unique scarf pattern which shows off the yarn’s amazing colors. When you come into the store and purchase a skein (or two) of this new yarn, you will get your choice of one of their three patterns. The scarves they created as examples of their patterns are on display. The scarves will help you choose which pattern suits you best as well as give you a good idea of how this super bulky yarn knits up.

Be sure to come on down and get some yarn and a pattern. Bring it to knit night!

I didn’t design the pattern I’m using, but if you like you can see the scarf I’m making from the Archangel colorway as it progresses.
