We recently received a most amazing reference book from Interweave Press — Knitwear Design Workshop by Shirley Paden-Bernstein. Suzanne stopped by the day we were unpacking the box, and snarfed up a copy post haste. She sat down with the book immediately, and then sent me this review.
I got up early and, with coffee in hand, read through most of the new book Knitwear Design Workshop by Shirley Paden-Bernstein. I like this book. It is like an amalgamation of the Vogue Knitting reference book meets Cat Bhordi’s sock books.
The book has slow, careful descriptions of each aspect of a garment, guides you through the garment’s creation, with you filling in worksheets to create a custom fit garment. I think she did a great job describing the math.
The author took great care to include wonderful descriptions of schematic diagrams, but her diagrams in the finishing techniques chapter lack a little. She would have done well to have collaborated with Cat Bhordi’s diagram artist.
It was nice to see a chapter on skirts and dresses.
I wish the book came in a three-ring binder so I could remove the worksheets to make additional copies.
All in all I give it a thumbs up. It is a welcome addition to my library. I will definitely be using this book to get myself past the ’sticky spot’ on several of my WIPs.
