I had planned a nice leisurely update today, telling you about new yarn at the store, complete with pictures. Instead, thanks to the airlines, I’m packing to go to market a day early. Don’t ask, it isn’t pretty.
Because I’ll be out of town, we’ll be closing at 4:00 on Thursday. No Knit Night. I’ll miss it, but I’ll take lots of pictures to share when I get back.

Happy holidays from Yarn Expressions! I sure hope you’re further along in your shopping/decorating/baking than I am. It’ll all get done, I’m sure, but I will forever burn the midnight oil.
Holiday Hours at Yarn Expressions – We’ll be open regular hours this week through Friday, and from 11:00 until 1:00 on Saturday the 22nd. After that we’ll be closed, to reopen on January 2 at 11:00. We’ve done this now for 13 years, and it gives me and my staff plenty of holiday time with our families.
Thank you, dear friends, for making this the place I want to be every day. I hope you all have peace filled, joyful holidays. See you next year!

This may look like ordinary sock yarn, but I promise you, it is not. This is Merino Sock from Rio de la Plata Yarns. We’ve been waiting for this yarn for some time, so it was only natural that Jill and I tore the box apart the moment it left the UPS man’s hands yesterday. It’s soft, it’s dyed in yummy colors (most are solids, there are two variegated shades in there) and it’s affordable. See that lovely yellow? I’m thinking it would make a lovely scarf using the Honeybee Stole pattern.

This is The Best of Interweave Knits, hot off the presses. I’m pretty sure I have every issue of IK at home, but this really is the best from this great magazine. As I paged through the book last night, post-it notes in hand, I found myself stickering almost ever page!
Reason #3 to shop now? We’ll be closed on Monday to celebrate Labor Day.

Yarn Expressions will be closed all day Friday, so we all can attend Donna’s husband’s funeral. Normal hours will resume on Saturday. Thanks so much for your outpouring of support. Knitters are amazing people… but we already knew that!

Holiday hours — We’ll be closed tomorrow, July 4th, to celebrate Independence Day. Normal hours apply for the rest of the week.
New in the shop — Take a look at these pretties that arrived this week.

This is Soxx Appeal from K1C2, a brand new sock yarn. Merino wool, nylon and 1% lycra make for a soft and stre e e e tchy sock, that stays up! As you can see, we have a good supply of a dozen colors to tempt you.

This is Fino laceweight, from Alpaca with a Twist. A blend of baby alpaca and silk, it’s sensuously soft and well priced at $21 for 875 yards. We have more colors coming later in the summer, but we were happy to take the few colors that were in stock at the warehouse. EDIT — Boy, that went fast! The red’s all gone!
Coming attractions — Many people have expressed an interest in finding unique, off-the-beaten-path yarns and fibers at Yarn Expressions. I’ve been working with several new, independent dyers to give you what you’ve asked for.
Very soon we should have a shipment from Dream in Color, both their worsted weight wool and fingering weight sock yarn. We’ll be kitting up their popular Tulips sweater, and a new design in more “boylike” colors, called Rocketry. I think you’ll like the look and feel of these lovely hand dyed yarns.
Last year I participated in a fiber of the month club run by Mama E at C*Eye*Ber Fiber Yarns, and liked it so much I began talking to her about carrying her yarns and fibers at Yarn Expressions. It’s taken us a while to come up with a plan, but we should have a variety of sock yarns and a selection of spinning fibers from her in the next couple of weeks. Erin’s sense of color and composition is top notch, and I’m really pleased to be able to bring these goodies to you.
I’ve also just placed an order with Linda and Tom at Grafton Fibers. Linda’s blended batts are sought after all over the country — we’ll be the first shop in the south to carry them. Tom makes beautiful knitting needles and crochet hooks. I’ve ordered a few to test drive to see if they’re also something I’d like to carry. This shipment should arrive in a month or so.
If there’s a company, large or small, that you’d like to see represented at Yarn Expressions, please be sure to let me know. I’ll do my best to bring in new yarns and fiber just to please you.

We’ll be closed on Monday, May 28 for Memorial Day. We’ll reopen at 11:00 on Tuesday. I’m getting ready to go to market, so if there’s anything you want to see at Yarn Expressions, leave a comment here and I’ll do my best to find it. Watch for photos from class and market commentary next week.

New and exciting things are happening at Yarn Expressions.
Item #1 is a change in store hours. Beginning April 1, we’ll be open from 11:00 until 4:00 Monday through Saturday, and 11:00 until 7:00 on Thursday.
Item #2 has me really excited. I’ve just signed an agreement with Majacraft to sell their spinning products. Those of you who’ve been to our Sunday Knit and Spin Ins have seen me with my green wheeled Suzie Pro. Now you’ll be able to spin on one too! I’ll be placing an order soon, and hope to have wheels shortly thereafter. We’ll also be making arrangements to have spinning lessons available at Yarn Expressions. Watch for a notice here when they’re finally set up.
Item #3 has me even more excited. We’re in the planning stages for this year’s Knitters Retreat. Set aside October 5-7 so you can join us at the Dubose Conference Center in Monteagle, TN. It’s an easy drive from anywhere in North Alabama, Southern middle Tennessee and North Georgia and the scenery should be gorgeous in early October. There’s space for only 20 people this year, so early sign up is a must. I should have final details and cost ready in the next week or so, and will post a link here when we’re ready to take reservations.
Change is good!

March is certainly coming in like a lion! We’ll be here until 7:00 as usual, and we’re hoping the weather resolves itself and moves on, so we can have Knit Night. If you’re able to brave the elements, you’ll get to see
- new patterns from K1C2 for Wick and Cottonade;
- the new Nashua Ecologie Cotton — naturally dyed pima cotton in soft, earthy shades;
- the shipment from Rowan that just came in — more 4 Ply Soft, Kidsilk Haze, Cashsoft DK and Calmer. I think there’s a new book in there too.
For those of you who ordered bags from the Jordana Paige trunk show — they’re here!

This is a reminder for those of you who might be thinking about showing up at the store this Thursday night after 5:00 — don’t. I’m gone so we’ll be closing at 5. We’ll be back to the regular schedule next week.
This afternoon I talked to Donna, who’s doing an admirable job of holding down the fort while I’m gone, with plenty of assistance from Jill and Kim. She says that the needles I ordered before I left have arrived, so if you’re waiting for needles, come and get ‘em. I also talked to Southwest Trading Company, who says they’re shipping our order of Tofutsies today. This is their incredible new sock yarn, a blend of wool, soy silk and chitin (pronounced kite-in), a product of shrimp and crab shells which offers antibacterial protection. I’ve knitted a few rows with this nifty new fiber, and really like it. If it arrives before I get home, save some for me, okay?
Mom and I have been having a wonderful time in San Diego. The weather has cooperated for once and it’s been great having this time together to catch up. I envy those of you who live close to your family — my family is scattered to the four winds, and no matter how frequently we see each other, it’s never often enough. Mom leaves tomorrow morning, so I’m going to go back to enjoying her company now. Look for another update later in the weekend when I’ve been bowled over by all the new offerings at market. Thanks for all the suggestions of things to look for — y’all are going to keep me hopping this weekend!
