A friend recently had a baby girl, giving me the perfect excuse to design and knit some lacy baby socks. I hope you enjoy knitting…
Materials: less than 1 oz. baby wool (I used Dale Baby Ull), and size US #1 & #2 dpns
Gauge: These socks measure 5″ around the lace pattern
Lace Pattern:
- Row 1: K2tog, yo, K1 in row below, yo, SSK, K1
- Rows 2, 3, 4: Knit

With smaller dpns, cast on 30 sts. Join and work in K1 P1 ribbing for 6 rows.
- Change to larger dpns and knit one row. Work in lace pattern for 3″, ending with row 2 of the pattern.
- Divide for heel: Knit across 5 sts. Turn, slip 1, purl across 15 sts. Turn. Adjust remaining (instep) sts so that there are 7 sts on each of two needles.
- Heel flap: (RS) Slip 1, knit 1 across 16 sts (WS) Slip 1, purl remaining sts Work these two rows for a total 13 rows, ending with a knit row.
- Turn Heel: Slip 1, purl 9, purl 2 together, turn. Slip 1, knit 4, SSK, turn. Repeat these two rows until all sts are used up and 6 sts remain on the needle. End with a knit row.
- Gusset: Pick up and knit 10 sts along the left side of the heel as it faces you. Work instep sts in pattern. The instep will now begin and end with an extra knit stitch. Remember to pick up the pattern with row 3. Pick up 10 gusset sts on the other side of the heel, and knit 3 sts from the first heel needle onto this needle. Round now begins and ends at the center of the heel. Decrease every other round on the heel needles, until there are 8 sts on each needle, as follows:
- Round One: Needle 1 - knit until 3 sts before the end, k2tog, k1. Needle 2 - knit in pattern across instep sts. Needle 3 - k1, SSK, knit to end of needle.
- Round Two: Needle 1 - knit, Needle 2 - knit in pattern across instep sts. Needle 3 - knit.
When decreases are completed, knit on without further shaping until foot of sock measures 2 1/2″ from edge of heel, or 1 1/2″ short of desired length.
- Toe Decreases: Repeat the following two rounds until there are 6 sts on needle 2 and 4 sts each on needles 1 and 3.
- Round One: Needle 1 - knit until 3 sts before the end, k2tog, k1. Needle 2 - k1, SSK, knit until 3 sts before the end, k2 tog, k1. Needle 3 - k1, SSK, knit to end.
- Round Two: knit all sts.
Work one more decrease round on needles 1 and 3 only, and knit sts from needle 1 onto needle 3 at the end. Weave toe sts together with Kitchener stitch. Done!
