I had on hand some very pretty mohair boucle, in several shades. They just happened to compliment the colors in my living room. One day my friend Jill came in the shop with a mohair stole she had purchased at the Highland Games in Georgia last Fall. It is the inspiration for this throw.
I found the stitch pattern in Barbara Walker’s Learn To Knit Afghan Book, recently reissued by Schoolhouse Press. It’s called Instant Plaid, and filled my need for an easy but elegant slipped stitch pattern perfectly.

Materials: Jaeger Flamenco, wool/mohair blend boucle, 110 yds. per skein; 5 skeins blue (A), 5 skeins burgundy (B), 2 skeins silver grey (C). Size 10 ½ circular needle, or size needed to obtain recommended gauge.
Gauge: 3 sts = 1″ in Instant Plaid stitch
Terms:
- k = knit
- p = purl
- sl = slip stitch from left needle to right needle as if you were going to purl it
- wyib = with yarn in back
- wyif = with yarn in front
Stitch Pattern: Multiples of 8 sts, plus 6
- Row 1: (RS) With B, k1, *sl 1 wyib, k2, sl 1 wyib, k4; repeat from *, end last repeat k1.
- Row 2: With B, k1, *sl 1 wyif, p2, sl 1 wyif, p4; repeat from *, end last repeat k1.
- Row 3: With A, knit
- Row 4: With A, k1, *k1 wrapping yarn around needle twice, k2, k1 wrapping twice, k4; repeat from *, ending last repeat k1.
- Rows 5 & 7: With B, repeat row 1, dropping extra wraps off needle when slipping the slip stitches.
- Rows 6 & 8: Repeat row 2.
- Row 9: With C, repeat row 1.
- Row 10: With C, repeat row 2.
- Rows 11 & 12: With A, knit.
Directions: With A, cast on 150 sts, knit 2 rows. Begin stitch pattern at row 1. Do not cut off colors not in use, just bring them up the side of the throw loosely, twisting with color in use occasionally, to prevent long loops on the side. Work until the throw is as long as you’d like it. Mine is 55″ long. End with row 12 and cast off in A.
